Play Bruce Cockburn’s “Waiting for a Miracle”
I’ve been listening to Bruce Cockburn’s music since the ’80s, and I’ve interviewed him numerous times for Acoustic Guitar. Recently I recorded this solo take on his great song “Waiting for a Miracle.” Back in the day I loved hearing Jerry Garcia Band play this one too.
I adapted the guitar part a bit (playing with a pick, for instance, rather than fingerstyle), but the core of the arrangement comes from Cockburn’s solo performances of this song. “Waiting for a Miracle” is more accessible than a lot of his other songs—he is a virtuosic player—and it feels like a good one to sing right now. There are some really nice touches in the chord voicings and rhythms he uses. While doing the video I improvised a little instrumental break as well.
