Guitar Sessions 58: Play Dave Matthews’ “Crash into Me”
Here's a Guitar Sessions episode sharing how to play Dave Matthews’ “Crash into Me,” one of his best-known songs. Matthews uses a lot of unusual voicings and patterns on the guitar, and this song is a great example: a drone-heavy part that sounds like an alternate tuning but is in standard.
By the way, I interviewed Matthews along with Tim Reynolds back in 1999 and took a deep dive into their acoustic styles. That article was republished in the book Rock Troubadours (out of print, but copies are still floating around).
As you’ll see in the video, the chord shapes in “Crash into Me” are a bit challenging for the fretting hand—they take a pretty big stretch and can be tiring. What I discovered in revisiting the song is that the part also works beautifully with a three-string partial capo—and man, it is so much easier! So in the lesson, I cover how to play it both ways.
