A Dark Dark Night on Halloween

Released as a single

Standard tuning

Words and music by Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers

It was a dark, dark night on Halloween
All around this town was a spooky scene
I saw a laughing witch fly through the air
There were ghouls and goblins everywhere

I was walking around to trick or treat
On the dark, dark end of a dark, dark street
And on the dark, dark street was a dark, dark house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse
(Wait a minute! That’s the wrong story…sorry)

I had a lot of candy, but I wanted a little more
So I knock, knock, knocked upon the dark, dark door
The dark, dark door it opened wide
An orange candle burned inside

I stepped right into the dark, dark hall
But I saw nobody there at all
From the dark, dark shadows came a dark, dark sound
And I thought I’d better take a look around

In the dark, dark hall there was a dark, dark stair
And down the dark, dark stair there was a dark, dark room
And in the dark, dark room there was a dark, dark chest
And in the dark, dark chest there was a dark, dark shelf
And on the dark, dark shelf there was a dark, dark box
And in the dark, dark box there was a dark, dark smaller box
And in the dark, dark smaller box was a dark, dark even smaller box
And in the dark, dark even smaller box was a dark, dark really small box
And in the dark, dark really small box was a ghost!

So I shut the lid of the really small box
And then I shut the lid of the little bit bigger box
And then I shut the lid of the even bigger box
And I put it right back on the dark, dark shelf
And I closed it right up in that dark, dark chest
And I ran right out of that dark, dark room
And I ran right up the dark, dark stair
And I ran right through the dark, dark hall
And I ran right out of the dark, dark door
And I ran right into the dark, dark street
And I did not stop till I was under my sheet!

Whew! No more trick-or-treating for me this year!

But then, I heard a voice.
“You forgot.”
What was that?
“You forgot. You forgot!”

Well, I had to see who that voice was. So I lifted up the corner of my sheet and peeked out. And across the room, there was the ghost—the very same ghost.

I watched him and he came floating across the room toward me. He was getting closer to my bed, closer and closer, his arm was reaching toward me, and in his hand there was a dark…dark…

Chocolate bar!

Happy Halloween!
