Guitar Sessions 37: Play Brandi Carlile’s “You and Me on the Rock”

In this episode of Guitar Sessions, learn how to play the great Brandi Carlile song “You and Me on the Rock,” from her album In These Silent Days.

The song has a very strong early Joni Mitchell vibe. In fact the open tuning guitar part I share, played by Tim Hanseroth, connects directly with Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “Both Sides, Now,” and “Chelsea Morning.”

These Mitchell songs are all in open D tuning (D A D F# A D) or open E (E B E G# B E), the same tuning one step higher. “You and Me on the Rock” is in open C# on the original recording—which is just open D lowered a half step.

Here’s a live performance by Carlile with her band that gives a good look at Tim Hanseroth’s guitar part.

In this lesson I cover the tuning and how to play the intro. On Patreon you can find:

  • Complete video lesson covering the verse, chorus, and bridge accompaniment.

  • Lyrics, chord charts, and tab for the full song.

  • Pitch-adjusted audio file in D, so you can play along in open D rather than going through the hassle of tuning down to open C#.
