Guitar Sessions 29: Play Graham Nash’s “Teach Your Children”

Happy 80th birthday, Graham Nash! In this episode of Guitar Sessions, learn an arrangement of “Teach Your Children” in dropped-D tuning, as used by Nash.

In the video you can also hear a clip from my 2016 interview with Nash, in which he talks about how Stephen Stills transformed the feel of “Teach Your Children” and also wrote the cool countermelody. (If you’re curious, you can read the whole interview here.)

“Teach Your Children” is a classic sing-along and easy to play in standard tuning, with just four chords. In dropped-D, it’s still straightforward to play, but you can get a fuller sound. In this arrangement, I add some embellishments and riffs made possible by the tuning that add a little bit of the color of the pedal steel (played by Jerry Garcia on the original record).
