Guitar Sessions 55: Play Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine”
In this episode of Guitar Sessions, learn “Ain't No Sunshine” the way Bill Withers actually played it.
This classic song is covered all the time, but rarely in Withers’ own distinctive guitar style. Rather than open chord shapes, he used closed three-note voicings that give a very different sound, as I explain in the lesson. These kinds of chords are often used in jazz/swing rhythm, and they’re great to know.
At the end of the video I do a full run-through of the song, drumming on my guitar for the iconic “I know...” bridge.
A lyric/chord chart and tab are available on Patreon—see link below.
Learn more about Withers’ guitar style in the book/video called Play Guitar Like the Great Singer-Songwriters, also includes my lessons on Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Joan Armatrading, Bruce Cockburn, John Prine, Joan Baez, John Denver, and Lucinda Williams—plus lessons by other authors covering Paul Simon, Willie Nelson, and more.
