Guitar Sessions 26: Intro to open G tuning

Learn the essentials of open G tuning and an arrangement of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses,” as played by Keith Richards.

Open G is one of the most common alternate tunings on guitar, along with dropped D, open D (D A D F# A D), DADGAD, and double dropped D.

Previous episodes of Guitar Sessions include an intro to open D by way of Mumford and Sons’ “The Cave,” and an intro to DADGAD. So now’s the time to focus on open G, as heard in classic songs such as Joni Mitchell’s “The Circle Game,” Jorma Kaukonen’s “The Water Song,” and of course “Wild Horses” as explored here.

To get even more into the Keith Richards zone, by the way, not only tune to open G but take the sixth string off entirely. (Personally, I like having those low notes available though.)

For further open G exploration, here is Pete Seeger’s great song “Quite Early Morning,” adapted for open G tuning guitar from his banjo part. The charts are also on Patreon.
