Editing projects

I have been an editor for a wide range of magazine and book publishers since 1987. I also teach editing and writing courses in the magazine department at Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Below is a sampling of editorial projects.
See also: links for journalists and editors. >> MAGAZINES As founding editor of Acoustic Guitar, I created the editorial blueprint, hired contributors and staff, and built the magazine into the leader in its field. In 1990, Acoustic Guitar won the Maggie Award for Best New Consumer Magazine from the Western Publications Association; in 2000, my last year as editor, Acoustic Guitar was a finalist for an Editorial Excellence Award from Folio:, along with TV Guide. I currently serve the magazine as a contributing editor. >>
Over the years I have also done freelance editing and proofreading for Macworld, PC World, MacUser, Parenting, Mix, Electronic Musician, San Francisco Focus, and other publications. BOOKS In the latter half of the '90s, I launched the book division at String Letter Publishing and acquired, developed, and edited dozens of titles (see samples at right). Since 2009 I have been developing, editing, and packaging a new series of lesson and method books for Acoustic Guitar, including Rhythm Guitar Essentials and Teach Yourself Guitar Basics.

AUDIO Many of my book projects have included instructional and compilation CDs, and my editorial responsibilities included shaping the audio content and working with engineers during the mastering process. I created and produced the Acoustic Artists CD Series, a quarterly audio complement to Acoustic Guitar magazine that introduced subscribers to new artists and songs. I coproduced Rhino Records' compilation CD The Acoustic Edge: Great Acoustic Music of the '90s and wrote the liner notes.
